Zacchaeus Meets Jesus
In the ancient city of Jericho, there lived a man named Zacchaeus who had a very important job—he was a chief tax collector. Tax collectors worked for the powerful Roman Empire, gathering money from the Jewish people. Many tax collectors were dishonest, taking extra money for themselves, and Zacchaeus had become very wealthy this way.
Because of his job and his dishonesty, the people of Jericho didn't like Zacchaeus at all. They whispered about him in the marketplace and turned away when he walked down the street. Zacchaeus had lots of money, but he didn't have any friends. Deep in his heart, he felt lonely and knew something was missing from his life.
One sunny day, exciting news spread through Jericho like wildfire—Jesus was coming to town! Zacchaeus had heard amazing stories about this teacher from Nazareth. People said Jesus healed the sick, helped the poor, and taught about God's love in ways that made everyone listen. Zacchaeus desperately wanted to see Jesus for himself.
When the day arrived, Zacchaeus rushed to the main road where Jesus would pass. But there was a big problem—Zacchaeus was quite short, and a huge crowd had already gathered. No matter how much he pushed and squeezed, he couldn't see over the tall people in front of him. The crowd was packed so tightly that Zacchaeus couldn't get through.
Then Zacchaeus had an idea! He looked up and saw a large sycamore tree with spreading branches hanging over the road. Even though he was a grown man wearing fancy robes, Zacchaeus didn't care what people might think. He hiked up his robes, grabbed the lowest branch, and started climbing.
Up and up Zacchaeus climbed until he found the perfect spot among the leaves. From his perch high in the tree, he could see everything clearly. He settled onto a sturdy branch and waited, his heart beating with excitement. Soon he would see the famous teacher everyone was talking about.
Before long, Zacchaeus heard the crowd getting louder and louder. Jesus was coming! Zacchaeus leaned forward carefully, watching as the group of people moved closer. In the center walked a man with a kind face and gentle eyes—it had to be Jesus!
Then something absolutely amazing happened. When Jesus reached the sycamore tree, he stopped walking. He looked up directly at Zacchaeus hiding among the branches! Jesus' face broke into a warm smile, and he called out, 'Zacchaeus, come down immediately! I must stay at your house today.'
Zacchaeus couldn't believe his ears! How did Jesus know his name? And Jesus wanted to visit his house? Zacchaeus scrambled down from the tree as fast as he could, nearly tumbling in his excitement. His face was shining with joy as his feet touched the ground.
