The Prince Who Became a Bird
Prince Aldric lived in a magnificent castle with marble towers that touched the clouds. He had everything a boy could want—toys made of gold, the finest clothes, and servants who fulfilled his every wish. But Prince Aldric had grown selfish and unkind, often shouting at the castle staff and refusing to share with anyone.
One autumn day, an old woman in tattered robes approached the castle gates, begging for food and shelter. Prince Aldric laughed cruelly from his window and ordered the guards to send her away. What he didn't know was that the old woman was actually Morgana, a powerful enchantress in disguise.
That night, Morgana appeared in the prince's chamber in a flash of silver light. "You have failed to show compassion," she declared, her eyes glowing with ancient magic. "Until you learn what it means to depend on others' kindness, you shall live as they do—small and overlooked."
Before Prince Aldric could apologize, his body began to shrink and change. Feathers sprouted from his arms, his nose became a tiny beak, and within moments, he had transformed into a small brown sparrow. He tried to cry out, but only a frightened chirp escaped his throat.
Morgana opened the window, and a gust of wind carried the prince-turned-bird out into the cold night. He fluttered awkwardly, having never used wings before, and landed exhausted in a bare oak tree. The world looked enormous and terrifying from his new perspective.
The next morning, another sparrow landed on the branch beside him. "You look lost, friend," chirped the little bird cheerfully. "I'm Pip. Are you new to this part of the kingdom?"
Prince Aldric wanted to explain who he really was, but Pip couldn't understand human problems. Instead, Pip simply offered to share his breakfast—a few precious seeds he'd found. The prince realized he was genuinely hungry, and gratefully accepted the kindness.
Over the following weeks, Pip taught Prince Aldric how to survive as a sparrow. They searched for food together, sharing whatever they found. When hawks circled overhead, they warned each other and hid together in the bushes. When winter's first snow fell, they huddled close for warmth.
One evening, as Prince Aldric was helping Pip gather twigs for a warmer nest, he noticed an injured sparrow struggling on the ground. Without hesitation, he flew down to help, calling other birds to assist in protecting the wounded creature from predators. Together, the flock kept watch through the night.
As dawn broke, Morgana appeared before the flock in her true form. "Prince Aldric," she said gently, "you have finally learned the lesson your heart needed. Kindness is not about what you have to give, but about choosing to give what you can."
In a swirl of magical light, Prince Aldric transformed back into a boy. He thanked Pip and promised to never forget his time as a sparrow. Racing back to the castle, he found his father, King Edmund, overjoyed at his return.
From that day forward, Prince Aldric ensured the castle gates always welcomed those in need. He had the royal gardens planted with seeds for the birds, and often visited his friend Pip at the old oak tree. He had learned that true nobility came not from crowns and castles, but from a compassionate heart.
