The King on a Donkey: Jesus Enters Jerusalem
The sun rose over the Mount of Olives, painting the sky with streaks of pink and gold. Jesus and his disciples stood at the top of the hill, looking down at the great city of Jerusalem spread before them. The city walls gleamed in the morning light, and crowds of people were already gathering for the Passover festival—one of the most important celebrations in all of Israel.
Jesus turned to Peter and John with an unusual request. "Go into the village ahead of us," he said, pointing down the path. "As soon as you enter, you will find a young donkey tied there, one that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it to me." Peter scratched his beard, puzzled by this instruction. "Master, what if the owners ask us why we're taking their donkey?" he asked. Jesus smiled warmly and replied, "Simply tell them, 'The Lord needs it,' and they will let you take it."
Peter and John hurried down the hillside, their sandals kicking up little clouds of dust on the rocky path. Sure enough, just as Jesus had said, they found a young donkey tied near a doorway in the village. The little animal had never carried anyone before—its coat was still soft and unblemished by a saddle.
As the disciples began to untie the rope, the donkey's owners came out of their house. "Why are you untying our colt?" they demanded, crossing their arms suspiciously. John stepped forward and said exactly what Jesus had told them: "The Lord needs it." To the disciples' amazement, the owners' faces softened immediately, and they nodded their permission.
Peter and John led the gentle donkey back up the hill to Jesus. The other disciples gathered around, and someone laid their cloak across the donkey's back to make a comfortable seat. This wasn't a warhorse like kings usually rode—it was a humble, peaceful animal. But this was exactly what Jesus wanted.
Jesus climbed onto the young donkey with ease, and the little animal stood steady and calm, as if it understood the importance of this moment. The group began their descent toward Jerusalem, and soon something wonderful started to happen. People along the road recognized Jesus—the teacher who had healed the sick, made blind people see, and even brought dead people back to life!
Excitement rippled through the crowds like wind through wheat fields. "It's Jesus!" someone shouted. "The prophet from Nazareth!" cried another. People began running from their homes and calling to their neighbors.
What happened next was extraordinary. People took off their cloaks—their most valuable pieces of clothing—and spread them on the road in front of Jesus, creating a carpet of honor. Others rushed to nearby palm trees, cutting down large, green branches. They waved these branches in the air and laid them on the path, filling the air with a sweet, fresh scent.
The crowd grew larger and larger, pressing in from all sides. Children sat on their fathers' shoulders to get a better view. Everyone began to shout with joy, their voices joining together in a thunderous chorus: "Hosanna! Hosanna in the highest!" The word "Hosanna" means "Save us now!"—it was a cry for help and a shout of praise all at once.
