Krishna and the Serpent Kaliya
In the peaceful village of Vrindavan, young Krishna lived among the cowherds beside the sacred Yamuna River. The village children loved playing with Krishna, who was known for his cheerful nature and extraordinary abilities. But recently, a dark shadow had fallen over their beloved river.
A poisonous serpent named Kaliya had made his home in a deep pool of the Yamuna. This wasn't just any snake—Kaliya was a massive Naga with multiple heads, each capable of spewing deadly venom. The serpent's poison was so powerful that it had turned the river water black, killing fish and birds, and making the water unsafe for everyone.
The villagers were terrified and heartbroken. Nanda, Krishna's foster father and village elder, forbade anyone from going near the poisoned waters. The cattle could no longer drink from their favorite river, and the children missed playing by its banks.
One hot afternoon, Krishna and his friends were playing ball near the forbidden part of the river. When Krishna threw the ball high into the air, a strong wind carried it directly into Kaliya's poisonous pool. Without hesitation, the brave young Krishna decided to retrieve it.
Before anyone could stop him, Krishna climbed the tall Kadamba tree that grew beside the dark pool. Taking a deep breath, he jumped from its branches, diving into the toxic waters with a tremendous splash. The villagers who witnessed this gasped in horror—no one had ever survived contact with Kaliya's poison!
The water churned and bubbled violently as Kaliya sensed an intruder in his territory. Furious at being disturbed, the giant serpent rose from the depths, his multiple hoods spread wide like deadly umbrellas. His red eyes blazed with anger as he wrapped his powerful coils around Krishna, trying to squeeze the life out of him.
But Krishna was no ordinary child—he was a divine incarnation with incredible powers. Instead of struggling, Krishna began to expand his body, growing larger and larger until Kaliya's coils loosened. The serpent hissed in surprise and confusion, having never encountered such strength before.
With lightning speed, Krishna leaped onto Kaliya's heads and began to dance! His feet moved in perfect rhythm, stepping from one hood to another in a magnificent divine dance called the Tandava. The weight of Krishna's dance pressed Kaliya down deeper and deeper into the water.
