Jesus Walks on Water
The sun was setting over the Sea of Galilee, painting the sky in brilliant shades of orange and purple. Jesus had just finished teaching a huge crowd of more than five thousand people, and everyone had witnessed an amazing miracle—He had fed them all with just five loaves of bread and two fish! Now Jesus needed time alone to pray.
Jesus told His disciples to get into their boat and sail across the lake to the other side while He sent the crowds home. Peter, John, Andrew, and the other disciples climbed into their wooden fishing boat and pushed off from shore, their oars splashing in the calm water. Jesus walked up into the hills by Himself, where He could talk to His Heavenly Father in prayer.
As night fell, the disciples were far out on the lake, rowing steadily toward their destination. Suddenly, strong winds began to blow across the water, whipping up waves that crashed against their small boat. The disciples were experienced fishermen who had spent their whole lives on this lake, but these winds were fierce and frightening!
They struggled with the oars, fighting against the powerful storm for hours. Water splashed over the sides of the boat, soaking their clothes and making the wooden planks slippery beneath their feet. The disciples were exhausted, their arms aching from rowing, but they couldn't seem to make any progress against the wind.
It was now very late at night—around three o'clock in the morning, the darkest part of the night. Through the spray and darkness, the disciples suddenly saw something that made their hearts stop. A figure was walking toward them across the surface of the water, moving steadily despite the crashing waves!
The disciples were terrified. "It's a ghost!" they cried out in fear, their voices barely audible over the howling wind. Their boat rocked violently as they huddled together, staring at the mysterious figure approaching through the storm. Who could possibly be walking on water in the middle of the night?
Then they heard a familiar, comforting voice calling out over the noise of the storm. "Don't be afraid! It's me, Jesus!" The figure walking on the water was their beloved teacher! He was doing something impossible—walking on top of the waves as easily as if He were strolling down a road.
Peter, always bold and enthusiastic, shouted back to Jesus through the wind. "Lord, if it's really You, tell me to come to You on the water!" His heart was pounding with a mixture of fear and excitement. Could he really do something so impossible?
Jesus called back with one simple word: "Come!" Peter didn't hesitate. He climbed over the edge of the rocking boat and stepped out onto the surface of the lake. To his amazement, the water held him up! He was actually walking on water, just like Jesus!
Peter took a few steps toward Jesus, his eyes fixed on his teacher's face. But then he made a mistake—he looked away from Jesus and noticed the strong wind whipping around him and the tall waves crashing nearby. Suddenly, Peter became afraid and started to doubt. The moment his faith wavered, he began to sink into the cold, dark water.
Lord, save me! Peter cried out desperately as the water rose around him. Immediately, Jesus reached out His hand and caught Peter, pulling him up from the waves. "You have so little faith," Jesus said gently. "Why did you doubt?"
Jesus and Peter climbed into the boat together, and the moment Jesus stepped aboard, something wonderful happened. The howling wind suddenly stopped, and the angry waves became calm and peaceful. The lake was as smooth as glass, reflecting the stars above.
The disciples stared at Jesus in absolute wonder, their wet clothes dripping onto the deck. They had seen Jesus do many miracles before, but this was extraordinary! They fell to their knees in worship and said, "Truly, You are the Son of God!"
The rest of their journey was peaceful and calm. As they sailed across the now-quiet lake, the disciples talked in hushed, amazed voices about what they had witnessed. They had seen Jesus command nature itself—walking on water and calming the storm with just His presence!
When they reached the shore, the disciples helped each other out of the boat, their legs still shaky from their frightening experience. But they were filled with joy and wonder. They had learned something important that night: Jesus had power over everything in creation, even the wind and the waves.
Peter especially had learned a valuable lesson that he would never forget. As long as he kept his eyes on Jesus and trusted Him completely, he could do impossible things! But when he let fear and doubt creep in, when he focused on the problems around him instead of on Jesus, he started to sink.
This incredible night on the Sea of Galilee showed the disciples—and shows us today—that Jesus is truly the Son of God. He has power over nature, over our fears, and over every impossible situation we face. When storms come into our lives, whether they're actual storms or difficult problems that seem too big to handle, we can trust Jesus to be with us.
The most important lesson is this: Keep your eyes on Jesus! When we focus on Him and trust Him, even when scary things are happening around us, He gives us the strength and faith to walk through our storms. But when we look away from Him and focus only on our problems, that's when we start to sink.
Jesus is always ready to reach out His hand and help us, just like He did for Peter. All we need to do is call out to Him, trust Him completely, and remember that nothing is impossible for the Son of God who walks on water!
