Jesus Raises Lazarus from the Dead

In the small village of Bethany, just outside Jerusalem, lived three special friends of Jesus: two sisters named Martha and Mary, and their brother Lazarus. These weren't just ordinary acquaintances—they were among Jesus's closest friends, and he often stayed at their home when he visited the area.

One day, Lazarus became very sick with a terrible fever. Martha and Mary grew more worried with each passing hour as their beloved brother grew weaker and weaker. They knew exactly what to do—they sent an urgent message to Jesus, saying, 'Lord, the one you love is sick.'

When Jesus received the message, he surprised everyone around him. Instead of rushing immediately to Bethany, he stayed where he was for two more days. His disciples were confused, but Jesus knew something they didn't—he had a plan that would show God's amazing power in a way no one expected.

Finally, Jesus told his disciples it was time to go to Bethany. 'Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep,' he said, 'but I am going there to wake him up.' The disciples thought Jesus meant Lazarus was resting, but Jesus explained clearly: Lazarus had died.

By the time Jesus arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days. According to Jewish custom, his body had been wrapped in strips of linen cloth and placed in a cave-like tomb with a large stone covering the entrance. Many people from Jerusalem had come to comfort Martha and Mary in their grief.

When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she ran out to meet him on the road. Tears streamed down her face as she said, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.' Even in her sadness, Martha showed incredible faith—she believed Jesus had the power to heal.

Jesus looked at Martha with compassion and said something amazing: 'I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.' He asked Martha if she believed this, and she declared, 'Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God.'

Martha hurried back to tell her sister Mary that Jesus had arrived. Mary immediately got up and ran to Jesus, falling at his feet in sorrow. 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died,' she cried, echoing her sister's words.

When Jesus saw Mary weeping and all the mourners crying with her, he was deeply moved. In fact, the Bible tells us that Jesus wept—the shortest verse in the entire Bible, but one that shows us how much Jesus cared about his friends' pain. Even though he knew what he was about to do, he felt their grief.

Then Jesus said something that shocked everyone: 'Take away the stone.' Martha protested immediately—after four days, there would be a terrible smell! But Jesus gently reminded her, 'Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?'

Several men stepped forward and, with great effort, rolled the heavy stone away from the tomb's entrance. Everyone watched in silence, wondering what would happen next. Jesus looked up to heaven and prayed aloud, thanking his Father for hearing him and asking that this miracle would help people believe.

Then, in a loud voice that echoed across the hillside, Jesus called out: 'Lazarus, come out!' For a moment, nothing happened. The crowd held its breath, and you could have heard a pin drop.

Suddenly, movement came from inside the dark tomb! A figure appeared, wrapped from head to toe in burial cloths, shuffling toward the light. It was Lazarus—alive! Gasps of amazement rippled through the crowd as people stepped back in wonder.

Jesus said calmly, 'Take off the grave clothes and let him go.' Friends and family rushed forward to unwrap the burial cloths from Lazarus. There he stood, breathing, blinking in the sunlight, completely healthy and whole!

Martha and Mary could hardly believe their eyes as they embraced their brother. Tears of sorrow turned into tears of joy! The mourners who had come to comfort the sisters began praising God for this incredible miracle.

Word of what Jesus had done spread quickly throughout the region. Many people who witnessed this amazing event or heard about it put their faith in Jesus. They had seen with their own eyes that he had power over death itself!

This miracle was one of the greatest signs that Jesus truly was the Son of God. It showed that Jesus had come to bring life—not just physical life, but eternal spiritual life for all who believe in him. Just as Jesus called Lazarus out of the tomb, he calls each of us out of spiritual darkness into the light of his love.

The story of Lazarus teaches us several important lessons. First, even when we don't understand why Jesus doesn't answer our prayers immediately, we can trust that he has a perfect plan. Second, Jesus cares deeply about our pain—he weeps with us in our sorrows. Finally, nothing is impossible for God—not even death can stand against his power!

Martha, Mary, and Lazarus experienced both deep sorrow and incredible joy. Their story reminds us that even in our darkest moments, Jesus is there, and he can bring hope, healing, and new life in ways we never imagined possible.
