Jesus Heals Jairus's Daughter
Jairus was an important man in his town of Capernaum. As a leader of the synagogue, a place where Jewish people gathered to worship God and learn, he was respected by everyone. But on this terrible day, none of his importance mattered because his precious twelve-year-old daughter was dying.
Jairus had heard amazing stories about Jesus, a teacher who could heal the sick with just a word or a touch. People said Jesus had made blind people see and helped those who couldn't walk to jump for joy. Jairus knew that Jesus was his daughter's only hope.
Pushing through the crowds gathered by the lakeside, Jairus finally spotted Jesus surrounded by people eager to hear his teaching. Without caring what anyone thought, this important synagogue leader fell at Jesus's feet. "My little daughter is dying," he begged, his voice breaking with emotion. "Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live."
Jesus looked at Jairus with eyes full of compassion and immediately agreed to come. Together they hurried toward Jairus's house, but the crowd pressed in from every side, slowing them down. Every second felt like an eternity to the worried father.
Suddenly, Jesus stopped. A woman in the crowd had touched his robe and been healed from an illness she'd suffered from for twelve years—the same number of years Jairus's daughter had been alive! While Jesus was speaking kindly to this woman, Jairus tried to be patient, but his heart was pounding with fear.
Then the worst news imaginable arrived. Some men from Jairus's household pushed through the crowd with tears in their eyes. "Your daughter is dead," they said sadly to Jairus. "Why bother the teacher anymore?"
Jairus felt his world crumbling around him. His precious daughter, gone? It was too late! But Jesus had heard what the men said. He turned to Jairus and spoke words that seemed impossible: "Don't be afraid; just believe."
When they arrived at Jairus's house, they found people crying and wailing loudly, as was the custom when someone died. Professional mourners had already gathered, filling the air with their sorrowful sounds. Jesus told them, "Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep."
The people laughed at Jesus scornfully. They had seen the girl; she was definitely dead! But Jesus made everyone leave except for the girl's parents and three of his closest disciples: Peter, James, and John.
The house became quiet as Jesus walked into the room where the little girl lay. Her skin was pale and cold, and she wasn't breathing. Jairus and his wife held each other, hardly daring to hope. Jesus went to the bedside and took the girl's lifeless hand in his. In Aramaic, the language they spoke, Jesus said gently, "Talitha koum!" which means "Little girl, I say to you, get up!" His voice was tender, as if he were simply waking a child from an afternoon nap.
Immediately—like the sun breaking through storm clouds—something miraculous happened! Color returned to the girl's cheeks. Her chest began to rise and fall with breath. Her eyes fluttered open, and she looked around in wonder. Then, to her parents' absolute amazement and joy, she stood up and began to walk around the room!
Jairus and his wife were completely astonished, their tears of sorrow turning into tears of overwhelming joy. Their daughter, who had been dead, was alive and well! She smiled at them, healthy and whole, as if she had simply awakened from a peaceful sleep.
Jesus, always practical and caring, told the astounded parents to give their daughter something to eat. After all, she would be hungry! He also instructed them not to tell everyone what had happened just yet, though such amazing news would be hard to keep quiet.
The girl who had died was alive again because Jesus had power over death itself. Jairus had believed when Jesus told him not to be afraid, even when everything seemed hopeless. His faith had been rewarded in the most wonderful way possible.
This miracle showed that Jesus cares deeply about our suffering and that nothing is impossible for him. Even when situations seem completely hopeless, even when it appears too late, Jesus can bring life and healing. He is more powerful than our biggest fears, our worst circumstances, and even death itself.
Jairus learned that day that believing in Jesus, even when things look impossible, is never wrong. Sometimes God asks us to trust him when we can't see how things will work out. That's what faith means—believing that God is good and powerful even when we're scared or confused.
The lesson for us is beautiful and encouraging: Jesus cares about what breaks our hearts. When we're afraid or facing impossible situations, we can bring our troubles to him just like Jairus did. We can trust that Jesus loves us and has power over everything that worries us, even the things that seem too big or too late to fix.
