Meet Dr. Maya Patel, a robotics engineer who designs and programs robots at a technology laboratory. Today, she's going to show us her newest creation—a helpful robot named Byte. Byte looks friendly with glowing blue eyes and can roll around on wheels, but right now, Byte is standing completely still, waiting for instructions.

Dr. Patel explains that robots don't think like humans do. Instead, they follow something called a 'program,' which is a set of step-by-step instructions written in a special language that robots can understand. Think of it like a very detailed recipe that tells the robot exactly what to do, when to do it, and how to do it.

The idea of giving machines instructions isn't new at all. Back in the 1840s, a brilliant mathematician named Ada Lovelace imagined that machines could follow coded instructions to perform complex tasks. She wrote the world's first computer algorithm for a mechanical computer called the Analytical Engine, even though it was never built! Ada understood something amazing: machines could do more than just calculate numbers—they could follow any instructions we gave them.

Dr. Patel sits at her computer and begins typing code to program Byte. The code looks like a mixture of English words and mathematical symbols. She types: 'IF sensor detects object THEN stop moving.' This tells Byte that when its sensors notice something in front of it, it should stop immediately to avoid crashing.

But how does Byte actually 'sense' things around it? Dr. Patel points to small devices on Byte's body called sensors. These sensors are like the robot's eyes, ears, and fingers all combined. Some sensors use light or sound waves that bounce off objects and return to the robot, telling it how far away things are—similar to how bats navigate in the dark!

Dr. Patel demonstrates by programming Byte to navigate across the room without bumping into anything. She writes instructions that say: 'Move forward slowly. Check sensors every second. If an obstacle is detected within 30 centimeters, turn right 45 degrees. Continue until destination is reached.' These clear, logical steps help Byte successfully cross the room!

As Dr. Patel finishes programming Byte, the little robot successfully completes its task—picking up toys from the floor and placing them in a box. Byte doesn't get tired, doesn't need breaks, and follows its instructions perfectly every single time. But Byte also doesn't feel proud, doesn't get creative ideas, and can't decide to do something different without being reprogrammed.
